BMI Limitations
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has important limitations to consider:
- Muscle Mass: May overestimate body fat in athletes and individuals with high muscle mass
- Age: May underestimate body fat in older persons who have lost muscle mass
- Body Composition: Doesn't distinguish between fat and muscle mass
- Ethnicity: Different ethnic groups may have different risk associations with BMI
- Pregnancy: Not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women
